Hand luggage guaranteed in the cabin with Transavia

Summary

In March 2020, Transavia will decide whether to make an adjustment to its hand luggage policy. With the possible adjustment, Transavia is responding to the wishes of passengers arising from an investigation. Hand luggage can still be carried for free, but the backpack or suitcase may go in the hold. If you want to be guaranteed that the backpack or suitcase will travel in the cabin, places have been reserved in the cabin for a fee. This can be used for a fee. An accessory such as a handbag or laptop bag that fits under the seat can in any case be taken into the cabin for free.

This payment option was chosen after research among Transavia passengers in the Netherlands and France. This showed that a small proportion of passengers would like to have certainty about their hand luggage and would also like to pay an amount to be guaranteed to take their suitcase or backpack on board. This prompted Transavia to adjust its hand luggage policy and reserve space in the luggage compartments for this 'paid' hand luggage. Passengers who purchase guaranteed hand luggage will be given the opportunity to board first at the Gate so that their hand luggage also fits in the overhead compartment above their seat.

Listening to our customers

It often happens that not all hand luggage fits in the cabin. Transavia also sees that passengers often take more hand luggage with them than is permitted. "This sometimes leads to delays at departure and also causes irritation because it is important for a number of people to keep their hand luggage with them," says Marije Teerling, responsible for customer relations with passengers at Transavia. 'This way, everyone can still take hand luggage with them for free, but we avoid delays and confusion when boarding.' In addition, we pay more attention to the rules for hand luggage when booking a trip. 'We clearly explain what the rules are during the booking process and will strictly enforce them. Precisely to ensure that traveling is even more enjoyable for everyone.' Taking hand luggage with you for free remains possible for everyone. However, there is always the chance that it will not fit and the luggage will still be taken into the hold (free of charge) at the gate.

Extra piece of hand luggage

Another change in the baggage policy is that from April all passengers will be allowed to take an accessory with them. This means that all passengers take one piece of hand luggage such as a rolling suitcase (55x35x25 centimeters) and an accessory such as a small handbag or laptop bag (40x30x20 centimeters) on board. Together, the hand luggage may weigh 10 kilos. The accessory is therefore always guaranteed to be in the cabin. The hand luggage item can be taken in the cabin if the guaranteed option has been purchased or if there is enough space. 'The addition of an accessory will hopefully make it easier if your suitcase or backpack needs to be taken into the hold. This allows our passengers to keep their valuables on board in their accessory," says Marije Teerling.
