Pets travel for free with Transavia on Animal Day

About six in ten households in our country have a pet. From a dog or cat to a guinea pig, canary or hamster. Dutch people are also increasingly taking their dogs and cats with them to holiday destinations. This happened no fewer than 30,000 times at Transavia in 2017. And that number is still growing every year, by an average of 10 percent.

Travelers who fly with Transavia tomorrow during Animal Day and bring their pet with them will receive an email. It states that their four-legged friend can travel for free on this special day. The transport price - based on a one-way trip - for the four-legged friends will be refunded.

Taking dogs with you on a trip

The unconditional love for their pet prompts more and more Dutch people to take the animals with them when they travel. The airline offers travelers the service and hospitality they have come to expect from Transavia. For example, dogs and cats weighing up to 10 kilograms (including the transport bag) are allowed in the cabin. Heavier dogs travel in a special part of the hold. It is additionally heated and equipped with climate and pressure control.

More than 100 pets fly with Transavia every day. The peak when dogs and cats travel is in July and August, when many Dutch people are looking for the sun and do not want to leave their pets behind. Up to six animals are allowed per flight: two in the hold and four in the cabin. It is therefore advisable to reserve a spot for your pet in time. Dogs and cats are allowed from the age of three months and 21 days. If the animal is allowed in the cabin, there are special transport bags or cabin kennels for this.

Five practical tips

Of course, pets also just want to have a nice flight. This way their owners can take care of that.

1. Do not give the animal a sedative beforehand. As a result, it will take less time to get used to its new environment and may even cool down too much during the flight.
2. Pets also need a passport. Always arrange matters such as vaccinations and travel documents well in advance.
3. Your dog or cat must wear an electronic identification system.
4. Pets sometimes suffer from airsickness. Therefore, do not give the animal anything to eat six hours before departure and nothing to drink from four hours before departure.
5. Will your dog or cat go into a kennel? Then provide a label with his name and feeding instructions on the side of the kennel.
