Transavia joins hydrogen project
On Thursday April 25, together with KLM, we joined the DutcH2 Aviation Hub, a program of Rotterdam The Hague Innovation Airport (RHIA) that is committed to accelerating the position of the Netherlands in hydrogen innovation and making aviation more sustainable.
We embrace innovative solutions to reduce aviation's long-term impact on the environment. Hydrogen, in addition to SAF and battery-electric flying, is expected to be a possible path to fossil-free aviation. The DutcH2 Aviation Hub aims to put the Netherlands at the forefront of hydrogen technology across the entire value chain, from production and supply of green hydrogen to its use at airports.
“We are taking another step towards a cleaner future for aviation,” said Jolanda Stevens, Program Manager Zero Emission Aviation at KLM. “It is essential that we test new technologies and innovations in the aviation sector to become more sustainable. By working together with the DutcH2 Aviation Hub we can work on scalable solutions for the future.”
Oliver Newton, Lead Sustainability and Innovation at Transavia, is also enthusiastic about the collaboration: "Transavia aims to reduce the CO₂ footprint. Hydrogen can play a very important role for the aviation sector towards fossil-free aviation. We are happy to contribute to to discover this initiative and the potential of hydrogen in making aviation more sustainable.”
The DutcH2 Aviation Hub program
The development of hydrogen-powered aviation goes beyond new aircraft and associated propulsion technology. Innovation is needed within the entire chain. For example, the production and import of hydrogen, transport to airports, storage at airports and hydrogen refueling. The program serves as a community for parties from the hydrogen value chain in aviation and as a springboard for the formation of projects in this area, with the aim of researching, testing and demonstrating the entire process - from production to operation. Within the DutcH2 Aviation Hub, several hydrogen-related projects are already taking place at Rotterdam The Hague Airport.
