Transavia installs sustainable winglet in collaboration with GKN Fokker Techniek

Summary

On February 12, Transavia equipped the first Boeing 737-800, the PH-HSK, with the so-called Split Scimitar Winglets with the help of GKN Fokker Techniek. This is a new type of winglet that ensures significantly less fuel use and with which Transavia is taking a step in making the fleet more sustainable.

Compared to the Blended Winglets, with which the Transavia fleet is already equipped, these Split Scimitar Winglets deliver an additional fuel saving of 1.5 percent, according to aircraft manufacturer Boeing. This is due to the improved aerodynamic properties that the wings get from this new type of winglets. For a Boeing 737-800, this saving can amount to approximately one hundred tons of fuel annually. In addition, the flight range is increased by about 200 kilometers.

The first installation on a Transavia B737-800 took place at GKN Fokker Techniek in Woensdrecht. Fokker Techniek and Transavia have been working together successfully for years in the field of regular maintenance, ad-hoc repairs and adjustments to our fleet.

Mattijs ten Brink, CEO Transavia: “Our collaboration with Fokker dates back to the early years of Transavia and we are therefore pleased that Fokker Techniek is now also contributing to the sustainability of our fleet,” Jeff Armitage Managing Director, Vice President of GKN Fokker Techniek: “We feel honored to have been selected to equip Transavia's first B737-800 with the Split Scimitar Winglet. Our employees are proud to complete this assignment for Transavia and look forward to intensifying our collaboration with Transavia with this prestigious program.” Transavia intends to equip 5 Boeing aircraft with the more sustainable winglets this year. Transavia's Dutch fleet currently consists of 35 Boeing 737-800s and 7 Boeing 737-700s. The last Boeing 737-800NG type was delivered to Transavia on January 25.
